Mexico sues Google over “Gulf of America”

Back in February, Sheinbaum threatened to sue if Google insisted on the far-reaching name change. The name Gulf of Mexico has been in use since the 16th century. The body of water borders not only the U.S. states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, but also Mexico and Cuba.
According to Trump's decree, the name change applies to the area up to the maritime borders of Mexico and Cuba. Users in the US will see the Gulf of America on Google Maps; elsewhere, both names are visible. Prior to the lawsuit, the Mexican government had written to Google demanding that it respect the historical name for the non-US portion in its map service.
